Act as a professional member of the pre-hospital emergency care team (Paramedic or EMT) in providing comprehensive basic and advanced life support treatment and care (non transport). General firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires and protecting life and property.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES: Responds to fire suppression, emergency medical incidents, and other fire-rescue related incidents within the jurisdiction of their assigned station and elsewhere with the boundaries of the Southern Manatee Fire Rescue District; using in the execution of their duties and within their scope of training, the most up to date techniques in basic/advanced medical life support, fire suppression, and other fire-rescue related activities, and equipment/apparatus operation.
Essential Job Functions: Under direction, performs highly responsible work involving the prevention and suppression of fires, and skilled Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic lifesaving and technical emergency rescue services work in the field. The employee is responsible for responding to emergency situations and assisting in the control and resolution of the situation. The employee works within the scope of established Fire District rules, regulations, and procedures, however, is expected to exercise considerable judgment and initiative, in emergency situations. Objective is to prevent and minimize injury and/or loss of life and property in emergency and fire situations. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Station Officer and Battalion Chief in conformance with departmental rules and regulations. Routine maintenance and custodial work on station, apparatus and equipment is also performed when not engaged in either fire pre-planning or public education activities. Performs related work as directed.

Minimum Requirements
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Position requires climbing ladders, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, stooping, and moving quickly. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.
Special Requirements:
Must be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application, as defined in FS633.34. Employees assigned to this classification will serve a one-year probationary period. New employee firefighters are highly encouraged to obtain a State of Florida Paramedic Certification (** see benefits).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Minimum Florida Standards certification (FF1 & FF2). Florida State EMT or Florida Paramedic Certification (preferred), Advanced cardiac life support provider (if paramedic) and current AHA CPR.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Qualified applicants selected for interview are required to bring copies of their Driver license; Current registration by the State of Florida as a Paramedic (preferred) or EMT; Current certification by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross or American Safety and Health Institute in BLS and ACLS; Certificate of Compliance from the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training; Valid driver's license.
