On February 20th and 21st, 2018, Southern Manatee Fire Rescue, Longboat Key Fire Department and Sarasota Memorial Hospital assisted Sarasota County Fire Department in their “Hands-only CPR Event” to high students throughout Sarasota.

This event ran from 0700 to 1400 hours and each class was about 1 hour long. Over this two day period we taught over 200 high school students on how to recognize an emergency, calling 9-1-1 and then immediately beginning fast high quality compressions and doing this until Fire-Rescue arrives on scene or other bystanders show up and can assist in “Hands-only CPR”.

For this event, we were assigned Booker High School and we taught this class in Booker High School large weight room which is located in the gym. All equipment was provided by the School Board.

Since the School District has AED’s, we also taught them how to use an AED and the importance of using an AED during a cardiac arrest event. We also provided information about Pulse-Point and gave them the information on how to download to their phones.

Both the teachers and the students did an outstanding job in learning “Hands-only CPR” and how to use their AED’s.

December 2017 and January 2018, Southern Manatee Fire Rescue District assisted Manatee County Public Safety – Emergency Medical Services with their roll-out of “Hands-only CPR” and Pulse-Point.
