On Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 10:00 to 2:00, the Southern Manatee Fire Rescue District held their 3rd Annual Open House to kick off the Start of Fire Prevention Week. The District conducted various demonstrations over vehicle extrication, Hazardous Materials Team conducted a simulated LPG leak with fire, EMS demonstrations and we had life-saving equipment on display. Our Hazardous Materials Team gave live demonstrations of our Drone, which was a big hit with everyone.

The Manatee County K9 Search & Rescue Team utilized their dogs in an actual search of a child lost, which the Rescue dog, Karma,found in a matter of minutes. Additionally there were smoke alarm demonstrations in our safety house, citizens and children were able to experience how to safely get out of a burning building in our simulated house fire that utilized artificial smoke and free educational material over fire and life safety tips.

The Division of Forestry, Florida Wildlife Commission and Arnold a juvenile American alligator, which was a big hit with both the kids and adults, Manatee County Sheriff’s Department Crime unit, Manatee County Community Paramedicine, Florida Highway Patrol and the Safe Kids coalition participated in our event in providing education to the public over safety tips. We had just under 300 citizens attend our Open House during this four (4) hour event. During the month of October our Fire Prevention Division and Operations Division will be conducting numerous Public Education demonstrations at all of our schools and many other locations teaching everyone fire safety!
